In 2009, I graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Supply Chain Management and no plan.  I moved from Michigan, to Grand Teton National Park, to Las Vegas – searching for meaning and running from God.  In true form, God found me.  He wrecked my matchstick world I had created and sent me on a year long Kingdom Journey around the world – The World Race.

While on the race (in Thailand, specifically) I started questioning why I loved music, cooking, languages, etc. Were they idols in my life or did God create me to be passionate about these things for a reason?  I felt the Lord calling me to stop using my passions for my own selfish desires and to start using them for the Lord’s glory. He created me perfectly unique and wants me to use these passions to connect with people, share Christ with people, love people.  In Cambodia these ideas were fermenting and in Malaysia the grapes became wine.

I can still see this man’s face clearly.  He had tanned skin, almost leathery, thin dreadlocks, a Buddhist tattoo on his arm, a Hindu dot on his forehead, and a Christian cross around his neck. He was so obviously looking for truth, but who was there to guide him?  I started thinking about the vagabonds of this world, who was reaching them?  Missionaries go to specific places, but do the sojourners fall between the cracks?  Out of these questions, the dream to own a hostel was born.  A hostel would be a perfect way to use all of my passions for the glory of the Lord and as a way to love others.  It would be a beacon of light upon the dark road and a place where people knew they could come to find answers, find truth.

After the race I went to Patagonia to help a family set up a Christian Guesthouse in Argentina.  They had been living in Argentina for a couple years at this point and had a plan in mind, but were not expecting the Lord to provide a team of eight missionaries to get the ball rolling.  It was an incredible summer and I fell in love with the idea of Christian Hospitality Ministry.

After my summer in Patagonia I went to South Korea to teach English for a year.  It was supposed to be my side-step from ministry, to pay off student loans and allow me to get on the missions field full-time.  However, that wasn’t God’s plan.  Seth Barnes found me on LinkedIn and messaged me that a team of World Racers are in South Korea at the moment, trying to launch World Race Korea and asked if I’d help. Before I knew it I was meeting with our small team of 6 every other week and helping create, what would later become, World Race Fusion.  The first Fusion team launched in 2015 and I loved being a small part of their squad, watching and praying from a distance.

I went back to work at the guesthouse for another summer and, by the end, Scott Kwak had convinced me to Squad Lead the second Fusion Squad.  I launched with my squad this past January and it has been some of the most amazing and humbling months of my life.  I’m currently on the field, in Latvia, and have only 2 months left. I’m looking towards the future with Base Leading the new Overflow Guesthouse, but at the moment I am grateful for where the Lord has me and excited to finish the race strong with my Fusion Family!
